So, there’s pretty much zero chance that this isn’t a black widow, right? Just found her, freshly dead, in my studio. Only spider that’s ever given me the jibblies.

Now I’m going to be paranoid forever. Thanks, nature.

I already have visions of a million baby black widows hiding out somewhere in here.

Sorry, man. I loved your drawings but the stakes are too high. When the city you lived it gets rebuilt (provided there are no more spiders and no more space lasering will be required), you will be immortalized in statue form. Your sacrifice has been greatly appreciated.

Where do you live? Asking so I can make sure I never go there

Body looks too long to be a black widow and the hou r glass should be on the bottom of  the abdomen.  Here’s one from my work room for comparison. Black widows are great for non toxic pest management. I never get them in my house. They’re perfectly content to hunt outside.

There is zero chance this was a black widow.

I love black widows. I just keep track of them and let them do their business eating all the bugs outside and in disused places.

They do like woodpiles, so just look before you grab or wear gloves. I’ve never actually had a problem with one, even carrying them around bare-handed, but I knew they were there.

I went into the attic one time and found a huge mama one on the topside of my kid’s fan. I smashed it then fell out of the attic. No Bueno.

Tough to tell, especially not knowing where you are, but I think you’ve got a red-spotted ant-mimic there .

There was red on both the dorsal and ventral sides of the abdomen. I didn’t get a shot of the ventral, though.

Nah, definitely not an ant mimic. For ref, I’m in Austin TX. I cranked up the contrast on the phone pic. Shiny black, with the long, spindly front and back legs.

Certainly looks like a black widow, with a desiccated abdomen . There are crap tons of those in northern California . Some are as big as a mouse.

H mmmm. For reference, here’s a western widow, and a southern widow:

The abdomen just looks wrong on your specimen, unless it got squished or something.

Probably a bit dessicated-- it was dead, after all.

Probably a black widow with a color variation, then.

Oh, I think it’s a male or juvenile widow spider:
